How much do you recommend I invest? We believe it is prudent to have a "rainy day" fund in a FDIC insured bank account to cover about 6 months of expenses to handle any unforeseen events (e.g., unemployment, medical, etc.). We believe the rest of your money should be invested for the long-term in stocks, bonds and real estate.

How do you determine what are the right mix of investments for me?We determine your Risk Profile Score using our proprietary scoring system which : Risk Capacity: Identifies your financial wellbeing and timeframe. Capacity measures the ability for you to endure market swings, and still achieve your goals. Risk Objective: Measures your expectation for investment performance relative to your needs. Risk Tolerance (psychometric): How emotionally comfortable are you with taking risk?
-
What will you invest my account in?We typically use exchange-traded fund (ETF) in our client accounts. An ETF is an investment fund that is traded on stock exchanges throughout the trading day, much like stocks and unlike mutual funds. An ETF holds assets such as stocks, commodities, or bonds, and trades close to its net asset value over the course of the trading day. Most ETFs track an index, such as the S&P 500 or Russell 2000. We evaluate thousands of ETFs for attractive investments based on their low cost, tax efficiency, and stock-like features.
-
How is this different from the other online investment services? We believe accountability is our key differentiator, both in the way we manage our client's investments and the relationships with them. We understand that this is your hard earned money. We don't just buy-and-hold investments. We are constantly looking for investment opportunities and threats and adjust your account accordingly. We invest your accounts with the same care that we do our family's and our own. Second, our customer service approach is "old school", we don't have a remote call center or confusing automated phone tree labyrinth . When you call, you'll get a live voice quickly to get you the answers you need. In fact you can call and ask to talk to the decision makers that are investing your account directly.

What is tactical or active investment management?Tactical or active investment management strategies actively adjust a portfolio's asset allocation in response to the investment market environment and volatility. The goal of a tactical or active investment strategy is to improve the risk-adjusted returns of passive management investing. It involves a continual management of risk through frequent portfolio rebalancing to a flexible asset allocation target. Tactical or Active investment strategies rely on continuous research to seek high total returns during constructive economic environments while maintaining a preservation approach during protracted market downturns. Simply put, tactical or active investment strategies look to sell when the market is high and buy when it is low. An example would be selling stocks in early to mid 2008 and buying them back in early to mid 2009.
-
How often do you trade? We like to stay invested growing your money. Over the course of a given year we typically make 3-6 allocation changes a year. Our investment strategies are more active than a strategic or passive investment strategy that rebalances quarterly, but we are far from day traders.
-
Are there fees associated when you trade?Through your service agreement with APEX clearing your account will be charged a monthly fee that allows us unlimited trading of exchange traded funds and U.S. publicly traded stocks for no additional fees. The combination of APEX's and adaptVest's advisory fee is no more than 0.05% per month.
-
How does this compare to target-date funds?Target date funds do not take the investor’s specific risk tolerance into consideration when choosing an asset mix other than giving investor's an estimated retirement year. Because only retirement age is taken into consideration the investment risk's targeted by the fund may not be appropriate for any given investor. Our approach is to build portfolios that consider time horizon as one of many different criteria, (e.g., age, savings, financial objectives, investment experience, pain threshold), The other main difference with regard to investment methodology is that whether an aggressive investor or conservative, we look to protect account values during protracted market downturns (e.g., 2008) by moving up to 100% of client accounts into cash or U.S. Treasuries.
-
How is this different from a traditional brokerage account? We actively manage the investments in your account in an effort to navigate ever changing markets. In a traditional brokerage account you are responsible for managing your investments and knowing when to make changes.

Is my account insured?Your account(s) is insured by the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) up to $500,000 in total value per entity, but limits insurance on cash to $250,000 per entity. As with all securities firms, this coverage provides protection against failure of a broker-dealer, not against loss of market value of securities. There is no guarantee that investment objectives will be met. Money market funds are considered a security. Cash is defined as funds not invested in a money market fund. Your account is not insured against investment losses.
